Bear Mountain - Perkins Memorial Tower

Bear Mountain - Perkins Memorial Tower

As far as accessible hiking spots go, we don't have too many without having to drive at least 2-3 hours to reach them coming from NYC. Seeing as I already did Mohonk twice, I wanted to try a new mountain, so we opted for Bear Mountain. There were several trail options, but we decided to go for the Perkins Memorial Tower trail which was good views, but not as scenic as I hoped. I was more impressed with workout I got from the climb. This particular day, in October was very chilly, but I was quiet warm from climbing rock faces. If you're planning on going, its totally free even for parking except on the weekends which is $8.

The hike was a 1,305-foot summit with the view of the Hudson River below. We discovered the tower, built in 1934 in memory of George W. Perkins, the founder and first president of the Palisades Interstate Park Commission. After climbing up we saw a 360 view of the area, each window had a panoramic photo showcasing each peak.

We made our way back and even though it stated it was a 4mile hike, I guess from wandering around, my sister Fitbit said we did 5.6 miles. Overall I definitely loved my day trip to Bear Mountain, I want to take the opportunity to take more trips for hiking Upstate, preferably 2 day trips to reach spots that are further out.
